Tech Talk – September 2018
A Note from the President
You most likely overlooked a very important day last week – on September 18th, it was National IT Professionals Day! The IT professional is the unsung hero of modern business, as written by someone. I for one couldn’t agree more!
To “observe” the day it is customary to say thank you to your IT professional who makes your life easier. However, the best way to “observe” the day is to seek out the unique insight your IT professional can provide in today’s always-on, always-connected world to help you make smart strategic business decisions that will lead to a greater competitive advantage.
If you missed the opportunity to do any of the above, it’s not too late! LMS is your IT professional, providing world class support, consulting, and network security to our clients 24/7, assisting our clients daily in staying online, productive, and ahead of their competition. Reach out to me directly, and I’ll explain the LMS difference to you personally.
LMS is as always, Tech Focused, Trust Driven!
To my team and fellow IT professionals, Thank You!

What is machine learning?
used with permission from IBM Big Data & Analytics Hub by Matthew Johnsen
What is machine learning? If you’re interested in analytics you might have heard this term a lot. Many misuse it and some predict grandiose outcomes for its future.
Despite the hype, machine learning is one of the most powerful technologies in the modern enterprise. Soon you’ll understand why.
What is machine learning?
Machine learning is a school of computer science that focuses on programming machines to improve their own performance through data and iteration.
In traditional programming, a human engineer needs to code every process the machine performs. This makes solving some types of problems difficult.
Take the example of a video streaming service like Hulu or Netflix. In order to make recommendations for users, engineers need to decide which videos to recommend based on input from users. It’s a case of “if A then B.”
Watch out for card skimming at the gas pump

With the summer travel season in high gear, the FTC is warning drivers about skimming scams at the pump.
Skimmers are illegal card readers attached to payment terminals. These card readers grab data off a credit or debit card’s magnetic stripe without your knowledge. Criminals sell the stolen data or use it to buy things online. You won’t know your information has been stolen until you get your statement or an overdraft notice.
Here are a few tips to help you avoid a skimmer when you gas up:
- Make sure the gas pump panel is closed and doesn’t show signs of tampering. Many stations now put security seals over the cabinet panel. If the pump panel is opened, the label will read “void.”

Does this sound familiar? You’ve got multiple tabs open in your browser and all of a sudden, music or voices blares from one of them. You scramble to find the audio icon on that tab, open the page and scroll down to stop the video that’s playing.
There’s a faster way to shut down that sound.
A new feature with the Windows 10 April 2018 Update can mute tabs in Microsoft Edge.
Here’s how to do it:
