Upgrade from Windows 7 to Remain Secure

It’s still coming whether we like it or not: Windows 7 End of Life. If your organization is still running Windows 7, what can you expect? Is this truly the end of Windows 7, and should you upgrade?

The answer, realistically, is yes. It’s a smart move to upgrade now, for security and stability.

Mainstream support for Windows 7 ended in 2015. Extended support ends on January 14, 2020. Windows 7 is now end-of-life. It will not be supported, nor will it receive regular patches and security updates.

What’s the risk of not upgrading?

Failing to upgrade to supported software, like Windows 10, means exposing your organization to avoidable risk. That risk is of cyberattackers taking advantage of vulnerabilities in a legacy operating system. Or it’s the risk of a failure or crash on an important machine, with no help forthcoming from Microsoft. (Using unsupported software may also conflict with prerequisites or standards for technology support and maintenance contracts with IT providers.)

Dictate Instead of Typing in Office 365 Apps

used with permission from HP Tech@Work

Did you know that in many Office 365 applications you can dictate text instead of typing it?

You may find this useful, especially if you need to respond to an email message and your hands aren’t free, or if you want to brainstorm out loud and capture your thoughts without taking notes by hand.

First you should check if you have a working microphone. If you’re using Windows 10, you can use the Voice Recorder app to do a test. Open this program and record a small snippet of audio. Play it back in order to see if your microphone worked. Use the “More options” icon in the bottom right corner to access Microphone settings to make changes.

The things in our offices have evolved right alongside our technology—here’s what we predict might be in our workspace in the next few years.

The last few decades brought us some of the most iconic office equipment—the kind we see used as props today in every ’80s movie reboot. There was the personal computer that made its advent in the last 1970s, and fax machines brought us closer together when it gained massive popularity in 1980s businesses.

These days, with the help of smarter devices and equipment, employees are just as comfortable working inside their offices as they are on the road or at home. They can dictate memos to their smart phones or white board plans to colleagues on Webex. With 5G and Wi-fi 6 fast on the horizon, office equipment will not only help us work smarter, it will connect us no matter where we are.
